Having spent an inordinate amount of time creating video English lessons for YouTube and amassing over 120,000 subscribers and 18 million+ views, I have decided to devote the majority of my time to writing books. I have taken this decision due to the precipitous fall in the amount of advertising revenue my videos now produce. Some years ago, my advertising revenue could top 1,500€ a month. Over the past 3 years or so, I have seen this reduced to less than 200€ a month. This despite the fact that I have many more videos, many more subscribers and many more daily views on YouTube.
The simple fact of the matter is that advertisers budgets have remained the same, or reduced, but the number of “English teachers” who are producing videos on YouTube has increased dramatically. The same cake now has to be sliced into ever thinner slices. Not only this, but a growing number of people are using ad-blocking plugins, and these are basically destroying the ability of small publishers like myself to cover their costs. My own videos no longer cover the cost of software licences, media licences and the myriad of other expenses that nobody thinks about when they watch my videos. As for my time, the hours I put into making the videos is nowhere near compensated for in revenue.
This is why I have decided to go back to my writing roots and devote my spare time to writing books that will be sold through Amazon, like my Sounds British: Master the 44 Sounds of British English Kindle book.
