I’m Richard, the R in R.I.Chalmers, and I am a successful online English teacher teaching through my virtual school at Britlish.com.
BRITLISH is the name I coined for my website. I wanted something memorable for my students and coined the word from BRITish and EngLISH, as a way of differentiating the English I teach from the English of North America, Canada, and Australia, to name a few. I managed to get the word added to the Wiktionary, too. Perhaps one day it will make its way to the OED?
I am a native British English speaking teacher of English as a foreign language. I have lived in Seville, Spain since 2003.
I have been teaching since I passed my CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) in 2003, here in Seville, Spain. I have taught in classrooms, in summer schools, in private homes, in businesses and, since 2009, exclusively online using Skype.
I also create video English lessons, and have millions of views on my YouTube channels and over 114,000 subscribers.
I write eBooks and online courses which you can find here.
I am also a professional writer, having been published in numerous magazines and newspapers since 1984 with the byline R.I.Chalmers.
I am also a keen, semi-professional photographer, and use my photographs in my books, my articles and my websites. You can see some of my pictures here at RIChalmers.com.
Britlish provides a growing library of English language learning materials for students around the world. Some of it free and some of it students can buy for the price they want to pay.
In order to develop my online teaching business, I had to become a proficient web developer because I am too poor to pay someone an expert to do the work for me.
I also had to learn how to animate in 2D and 3D in order to produce ever more engaging video English lessons. My hard work has been recognised by the company which creates some of the software I use, Reallusion, and by an educational publisher, boclips.
I created this blog in order to share with other English language teachers the things I have learned over the years which might help others to enjoy their working life as much as I do.
